Airflex 300 Polyvinyl alcohol protected vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer Air Products Ethylene copolymers - emulsions (VAE, EVC) >> Vinyl Acetate Ethylene copolymers, VAE Airflex 300 emulsion is a vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion designed as a base for highspeed packaging adhesives. Airflex 300 emulsion offers the formulator broad formulating latitude because of its excellent properties. Airflex 300 emulsion exhibits properties that are not attainable by blending a homopolymer with a low Tg vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer. Compared with homopolymers, Airflex 300 emulsion has inherently higher wet tack and grab and much better thickening response to plasticizers. Airflex 300 emulsion also exhibits better adhesion to clay-coated paperboard, packaging films and aluminum foil. The copolymer has better water resistance than a homopolymer while still retaining good cleanup properties. Additionally, the dried film of Airflex 300 emulsion is more flexible but exhibits good tensile strength and high creep resistance. Therefore, formulations based on Airflex 300 emulsion generally require lower levels of high-cost additives. When additives such as plasticizers, tackifiers and thickeners are used, the response of Airflex 300 emulsion is much better than a homopolymer. Airflex 300 emulsion thickens rapidly to high viscosities with the addition of plasticizers or solvents. The viscosity can also be increased with additives such as poly(vinyl alcohol), cellulosic thickeners, starch and alginates. Inverse polyacrylate emulsions or associative thickeners may also be used. The addition of plasticizers will improve the specific adhesion of Airflex 300 emulsion, in addition to improving the water resistance and increasing the setting speed. Fully hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) will also impart water resistance to Airflex 300 emulsion while further enhancing the excellent wet tack. Applications: Airflex 300 emulsion offers several advantages in packaging adhesive applications. Rapid setting speed is very useful in carton, case forming and sealing applications. The natural affinity of the emulsion for coated stocks as well as kraft, and good water resistance suggest the use of Airflex 300 emulsion as an adhesive base suitable for bag seams, cups, tube winding and highpressure laminates. Airflex 300 emulsion has sufficient shear strength, ideal for some wood laminating and low-cost veneering. Because of its flexible nature, the emulsion may also be used in laminations of leather to cloth and fiberglass to paper, bookbinding, and padding. Other common applications of Airflex 300 emulsion include craft and hobby glues, microwave packaging, and envelope back gums. Airflex 300 emulsion can be applied by a variety of methods including roll, spray and extrusion. Excellent mechanical stability enables Airflex 300 emulsion to work well on very high-speed packaging machines and to be sprayed for highspeed operations.
