Airflex 323 Air Products Ethylene copolymers - emulsions (VAE, EVC) >> Vinyl Acetate Ethylene copolymers, VAE Airflex 323 emulsion is a vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer specifically designed as an internally plasticized poly(vinyl acetate) copolymer similar to a homopolymer containing five to seven parts of plasticizer. Internal plasticization, in which ethylene is utilized, allows Airflex 323 emulsion to have better adhesion to difficult-to-adhere surfaces without the use of costly solvents. It has a variety of very useful properties that allows it to be used as a base for high-speed packaging adhesives. These properties include rapid setting speed, strong wet tack, long tack range, good water resistance and high plasticizer-thickening response. It is also compatible with both fully and partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol). Compounding Airflex 323 emulsion is very versatile when it comes to formulating. This emulsion can be formulated with typical plasticizers, solvents, fillers and/or thickeners to achieve properties far superior to a similiarly compounded homopolymer. By using fully hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol), plasticizers, solvents or crosslinking agents, the water resistance can be enhanced. In applications where reduced water resistance is needed, such as remoistenable or easy-cleanup adhesives, Airflex 323 emulsion can be readily compounded with partially hydrolyzed PVOH, glycols, sucrose, urea or salts such as sodium nitrate, calcium chloride or sodium chloride. Formulating with the addition of fully or partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) or borated poly(vinyl alcohol) helps to increase the wet tack. Applications Airflex 323 emulsion can be used in a variety of applications. Application techniques include roller, wheel, spray and extrusion. It has excellent rheology allowing it to be used in high-speed packaging applications such as corrugated case sealing. Good water resistance makes it ideally suited for bag seams, corrugated case forming and sealing, carton forming, and cup forming. Strong wet tack allows Airflex 323 emulsion to be used in collating.
