These physical properties, plus its wide compatibility, make it useful in a variety of applications, including lacquers, inks, paper coatings, varnishes, adhesives, sealing compounds, plastics, wood preservatives and perfumes. Resinous nature, clarity, high refractive index; low vapor pressure, high boiling point, good thermal stability; excellent surface-wetting properties; compatible and miscible with a wide variety of materials. Soluble in esters, ketones, alcohols, ethers, coal tar, petroleum hydrocarbons, and vegetable and mineral oils. Insoluble in water. Compatible at all ratios, or in limited but practically useful proportions, with nitrocellulose, ethylcellulose, chlorinated rubber, and most other film-formers; with water-soluble film-formers such as starch, casein, and glue; with natural and synthetic rubbers, SIS and SBS (styrene block copolymers), polyolefins, EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) copolymer, natural and synthetic resins, waxes, and asphalt. Incompatible with cellulose acetate and polyvinyl acetate. Methyl ester of rosin. Amber-colored, near-neutral, tacky, viscous liquid. Used in adhesives and sealing compounds.
