Bentone A-140 tetraalkyl ammonium bentonite Elementis Rheology Modifiers / Thickeners >> Organoclay >> Bentonite SEALANT ADHESIVE Rheological Additive for Asphalt Based Applications BENTONE A140 additive is an organoclay (tetraalkyl ammonium bentonite). High efficiency versus conventional additives, 2X or more depending on application and dispersion equipment Smooth and easy incorporation into hot { >_ 140°F (60°C)} Asphalt cuts Does not require any chemical activator other than water Produces highly thixotropic rheology and excellent particle suspension Driveway Sealers Foundation Sealers Automotive: Underbody and Soundproofing Imparts excellent sag resistance Controls syneresis Provides excellent particle suspension in filled and aluminized coatings Prevents excessive penetration of liquid vehicles into porous substartes Provides temperature stable viscosity Provides excellent emulsion stability (Driveway Sealers) BENTONE® A140 rheological additive can be utilized with typical mixing equipment common to the industry. Optimum gelling efficiency will occur more readily with high speed dispersers which allows the manufacturer to apply a higher degree of mechanical and thermal energy to the system. Polar Additives Water is recommended as the only activator necessary for efficient development of gel strength in most applications. (Due to the wide range of end use applications and formulations variables, other typical activators such as methanol/water or propylene carbonate may also be considered.) High Speed Dispersion BENTONE A140 additive is initially mixed into a hot asphalt ( >_ 140°F) cut followed by incorporation of the polar additive. The optimum high speed dispersion techniques for pigments are also optimum for BENTONE A140 additive. One proven successful approach for developing optimum performance would be to add the following in the order listed: Asphalt cut with mineral spirits @ 140°F or higher. Add BENTONE A140 and mix for 15 minutes. Add water and mix an additional 5 minutes. Add pigment or extenders and disperse Add remaining ingredients and finish using standard methods. The amount of BENTONE A140 rheological additive required depends upon the type of system and the degree of thickening or other properties desired. In automotive underbody, for example, 25 to 50 pounds per 100 gallons would be recommended to obtain a wet film application of 75 mils. The water activator is normally used at a level of 10-20% by weight of BENTONE A140. Experimentation is suggested to determine the optimum quantity for specific systems. PREGELS Due to the poor wetting characteristics of asphalt, a pregel of 10% BENTONE A140 in hot mineral spirits (~140°F) followed by addition to the asphalt cut may improve efficiency. As with any new chemical substance, it's recommended that the Material Safety Data Sheet be reviewed prior to use. Rheological additive for asphalt based adhesives and sealants. Does not require any chemical activator other than water. Produces highly thixotropic rheology and good particle suspension. Imparts good sag resistance. Controls syneresis. Prevents excessive penetration of liquid vehicles into porous substartes. Provides temperature stable viscosity and good emulsion stability.
