The use of BENTONE SD-2 offers the manufacturer an opportunity to increase productivity, cut energy and material costs, as well as simplifying the manufacture and post correction processes - all while maintaining the high products quality obtained with conventional organoclay rheological additives. Composition Organic derivative of a montmorillonite clay APPLICATIONS BENTONE SD-2 additive is an efficient replacement for BENTONE 27 additive and fumed silica in systems containing moderate to highly polar solvents (Ketones, esters, ether esters and alcohols). This includes polar systems containing some aromatic solvents. BENTONE SD-2 may be used in: industrial finishes automotive finishes core washes/foundry paints marine paints adhesives and sealants autobody space fillers maintenance coatings BENTONE SD-2 additive is not recommended for greases and similar binderless systems. When replacing fumed silica in high or 100% solids systems, evaluate BENTONE SD-2 both with and without a polar activator. LEVEL OF USE The level of BENTONE SD®-2 additive to be used in a specific system depends on the degree of thickening, sag control and pigment setting desired. Use levels are typically 0.2-2.0% by weight of the entire formula. When formulating with BENTONE SD-2, a good starting point is replacement of the currently used organoclay or fumed silica at an equal weight, then optimizing. Less BENTONE SD-2 additive may be required because the full inherent efficiency can be obtained, even under lower shear, plant conditions. In many systems, at higher thickener concentration levels, BENTONE SD-2 additive is more efficient than BENTONE 27 additive or fumed silica. INCORPORATION The easy and dependable dispersibility of BENTONE SD-2 additive permits its additive at any point in the manufacturing process. This rheological additive can be incorporated in the dispersion phase under high shear and in the letdown tank under lower shear. Neither a polar activator or a pregel is required. Using the Grind BENTONE SD-2 may be incorporated anywhere during or after the pigment grind. Prewetting or predispersion is not necessary. Minimum activation temperature is not required. Use in the Letdown When BENTONE SD-2 is used in the letdown, it should be sifted in and good turbulent mixing conditions provided. For best performance in the letdown, the system should be between 24°C-32°C (75°F-90°F). If letdown temperatures are too high, BENTONE SD-2 additive may still be used either, a) by pulling out part of the batch and adding the BENTONE SD-2 on a high speed disperser or b) prewetting the BENTONE SD-2 powder with solvent. The prewet powder may then be added to the hot letdown and mixed in. More detailed information on the use of BENTONE SD-2 additive and its performance is available in Rheox product brochure, PB-154. Do not post add BENTONE SD-2 to systems containing primarily aromatic solvents.
