Mercap 100 Surface modified clay Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Extenders / Fillers >> Clays Extenders / Fillers >> Kaolin SEALANT ADHESIVE Kaolin fillers are widely used in the adhesive, caulk, and sealant industries to provide various desirable physical and economic properties. Not only can these products be used to lower raw material costs, but they can also be used to enhance the cohesive strength of an adhesive. Below is a description of these reinforcing, surface-modified fillers. A special class of kaolin performance products is our chemically treated, surfaced-modified clays. Mercapto (sulfur) and amino (nitrogen) organofunctional silane (silicon) treatments impart improved performance to hard kaolin products. During the chemical and modification process, hydrolyzed silane compounds are reacted onto the kaolin surface forming very strong covalent bonds. The coupling functional groups can then crosslink with the given elastomeric system. A good use of high surface area fillers in adhesives is to adsorb residual oils on the substrate surface prior to cure. An example is oily steel. This may minimize the need for pre-treatment of the substrate surface prior to application of the adhesive. It should be remembered that different fillers will either accelerate or inhibit the resin curing system. For first time use, all fillers should be investigated on small batches before using in full-scale work. Also, the use of fillers can limit the penetration of the adhesive into porous substrates. Care must be taken not to overload with excess amounts of filler so as not to exacerbate this condition. Surface modified Clay. Used as filler in adhesive, caulk, and sealant industries. Provides various physical and economic properties. Enhances cohesive strength. Adsorbs residual oils on the substrate surface prior to cure.
