Alcogum L-251 Latex National Starch and Chemical-Alco Chemical Rheology Modifiers / Thickeners >> Alkali-Swellable Acrylic polymers (ASE/ HASE) ADHESIVE ALCOGUM™ polymers are pre-activated high molecular weight rheology modifiers used to viscosify a wide range of adhesive compounds. ALCOGUM thickeners provide stable viscosity over a broad pH range and are resistant to biological degradation. ALCOGUM™ L-200 Series thickeners comprise an evolving family of products designed by Alco Chemical to meet rheology and water retention requirements for the paper and paperboard industries. These highly effective, high molecular weight polymeric thickeners allow formulators to increase the level of water retention and select the optimal low and high shear flow properties to optimize machine productivity and finished sheet quality. The ALCOGUM™ L-200 Series meets today’s demanding coating trends. These trends include: Higher coater speeds requiring improved high shear rheology to maximize machine efficiency. LWC requiring controlled coating immobilization and structuring properties. Increased coating grade differentiation calling for a broader range of performance properties from a rheology modifier. Changes in equipment and automated coating kitchens affecting requirements and use of viscosifiers. Increased use of film presses and metering size presses as LWC/ULWC coaters The ALCOGUM™ L-200 Series are available in several grades. Products may be selected with different levels and types of hydrophobic substitutions. Substituted polymers, referred to as associative thickeners, allow the formulator to select the combination of water retention, viscosity, and flow properties that maximize the operation’s productivity. ALCOGUM L-251 is a hydrophobically modified alkali swellable emulsion designed as a temperature stable thickener for the paper industry. Temperature fluctuations in the paper coating process cause variation in paper coating quality and runnability. To achieve consistent coating performance, uniform coating viscosity must be maintained. As coating temperature increases, conventional HASE thickeners lose thickening efficiency. As a result of the higher temperatures, the thickener must be increased to provide the required viscosity at the coater blade. ALCOGUM L-251, unlike conventional HASE thickeners, uses patented technology to maintain rheological properties and coating viscosities at elevated temperatures. This feature eliminates typical thickener adjustments made in response to variations in coating makedown, base stock and coater pond temperature, which results in coating inconsistencies. ALCOGUM L-251 was developed for use in lightweight coating formulations that require additional water retention and reduced blade pressure for improved coater runnability. This product allows the formulator to build more water retention into his formulation while maintaining lower Hercules high shear viscosity as compared to synthetic and cellulosic thickeners. Improved coater efficiency, enhanced paper properties and reduced thickener requirement may be obtained using ALCOGUM L-251. Maintains coating viscosity at elevated temperatures Easy to pump and meter Maximizes water retention Suited for automated coating kitchens Reduces thickener levels Improves shear stability Eliminates Pigment shock Freeze-thaw stable Improves runnability ALCOGUM L-251 is both freeze-thaw and shear stable*. This product utilizes a proprietary emulsification system which provides excellent mechanical shear and freeze-thaw stability to the emulsion. These emulsions have enhanced compatibility with typical coating raw materials which simplifies addition and mixing techniques. Do not store or transfer ALCOGUM L-251 into carbon steel lines, pumps or tanks. ALCOGUM L-251 will discolor after contacting carbon steel. ALCOGUM L-251 can be transferred through polypropylene or Teflon® lined air operated diaphragm (A.O.D.), peristaltic or lobe pumps. Hydrophobically modified alkali swellable emulsion. Designed as a temperature stable thickener for the paper industry. Offers medium Brookfield viscosity, low Hercules viscosity and high water retention. Permits to build more water retention while maintaining lower Hercules high shear viscosity as compared to synthetic and cellulosic thickeners. Provides stable viscosity over a broad pH range and resistance to biological degradation.
