Morflex MSC Monostearyl citrate 1337-33-3 Reilly Industries-Morflex Plasticizers SEALANT >> Pre-formed tape / Gasket Monostearyl Citrate (MSC) is a waxy mixture of mono- and distearyl citrate esters which show utility as an oil-soluble chelating agent. The long carbon chains render it soluble in a variety of oils while the free carboxyl groups confer the chelation effect. In many cases the shelf life of oils may be poor owing to the presence of trace amounts of metals such as iron. In these cases MSC serves as a stabilizer through chelation of the metal. In other cases poor shelf life may result from other causes in addition to the trace metal. In these cases MSC may act synergistically with an antioxidant to stabilize the oil. The suggested use level is in the range of 0.2 - 0.5%. In addition to the chelation effect there are a number of other possible uses for stearyl citrate mixtures as indicated in the Code of Federal Regulation Vol. 21 noted below: STEARYL CITRATE 182.685 Generally recognized as safe as a sequestrant up to 0.15% 582.6851 Generally recognized as safe as a sequestrant in animal feed up to 0.15% MONOSTEARYL CITRATE 181.27 Mono-, di- and tristearyl citrates granted prior sanction for use as plasticizers in the manufacture of food-packaging materials 175.300 Plasticizer, resinous and polymeric coatings 175.380 Xylene-Formaldehyde resins condensed with 4,4' - isopropylidenediphenol epichlorohydrin epoxy resins 175.390 Zinc-silicon dioxide matrix coatings 176.170 Components of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods 177.1210 Closures with sealing gaskets for food containers 178.3910 Surface lubricants used in the manufacture of metallic articles Mixture of mono and distearyl citrate esters. Possesses long carbon chains and some free carboxyl groups. Used as an oil-soluble chelating agent. Applications: closures with sealing gaskets for food containers.
