Diisobutyl ketone Mixture of 2,6-dimethyl-4-heptanone and 4,6-dimethyl-2-heptanone 108-83-8 Shell Chemicals Solvents >> Ketones Acrylics/ Acrylates Vegetable based Epoxy (EP) PU - Prepolymers Ketones are water clear, highly mobile liquids having a characteristic odour. They are chemically very stable. Due to the carbonyl group, ketones are hydrogen acceptors and have an outstanding solvency. Out of propylene and butylene, Shell produces many ketones covering the whole range of volatilities. Examples are acetone, MEK, MIBK and DIBK. For information on the specific ketones available in your region, please click on the `datasheets' button in the left-hand navigation bar. Ketones are used in surface coatings, adhesives, thinners, printing inks and cleaning agents. Other industrial use is in pharmaceuticals, extraction, dewaxing, and as chemical intermediates (MMA, Bisphenol A and isophorone). Diisobutyl ketone is a slow evaporating ketonic solvent which is immiscible with water, but miscible with other organic solvents. It is a light coloured liquid with a mild, characteristic odour. Shell DIBK is a mixture of two isomers: 2,6-dimethyl-4-heptanone and 4,6-dimethyl-2- heptanone in the ratio 2:1. Diisobutyl ketone is an exceptionally good solvent for a wide variety of natural and synthetic resins, it is particularly useful when a slow evaporating solvent with good solubility characteristics is required. DIBK finds application in acrylics, epoxies, polyurethanes, vinyls, nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate lacquers, in electrode position, latex paints and organosols. It is also used in leather lacquers, and as a cleaning fluid booster, lubricating oil dewaxing agent and in the pharmaceutical and mining industries. Light coloured, very good, slow evaporating ketonic solvent for a wide variety of natural and synthetic resins. Possesses mild, characteristic odor, good solubility characteristics and compatibility with acrylics, epoxies, polyurethanes, vinyls and nitrocellulose.
