Pioloform BN 18 polyvinyl butyral 63148-65-2 Wacker Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) ADHESIVE PIOLOFORM® BN 18 is a polyvinyl butyral resin with a very low viscosity made by Wacker Polymer Systems. It is produced by a reaction between polyvinyl alcohol and butyraldehyde. PIOLOFORM® BN 18 is a physically drying binder which forms films through solvent evaporation. The films are odourless and tasteless. Due to the free hydroxyl groups in Pioloform® BN 18, it can also be used as a reactive resin or as a component in two-pack systems. For example, it can be crosslinked with melamine or phenolic resins. The corresponding mechanisms are described in our brochure Pioloform® Polyvinyl butyrals. The best solvents for polyvinyl butyrals are alcohols. Pioloform® BN 18 readily dissolves in ethanol, 2- propanol, n-butanol, methoxy propanol, ethoxy propanol and diacetone alcohol. Esters and ketones are less efficient solvents compared to alcohols. Aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic solvents do not dissolve Pioloform® BN 18. However they can be used as diluents together with true solvents (alcohols). Pioloform® BN 18 is readily compatible with the pigments and fillers used in the coatings industry. Its excellent pigment wetting property results from the presence of free hydroxyl groups. Pioloform® BN 18 is therefore used to manufacture pigment preparations. Pioloform® BN 18 can be combined in any proportions with other Pioloform B grades. It is also compatible with a variety of other resins. Due to the large number of possible combinations it is recommended to carry out tests in the respective system of the intended application. As a result of their chemical composition, polyvinyl butyral resins produce very flexible films. If necessary, their low-temperature flexibility can be increased by adding an external plasticizer, which will also reduce solution viscosity. Pioloform® BN 18 resin is compatible with a number of plasticiziers based on esters of phthalic acid, citric acid, sebacic acid or phosphoric acid. In addition, polymeric plasticizers such as polyethylene glycols and urea resins can also be used.
