Vinnapas RI 551 Z Ethylene/vinyl laurate/vinyl chloride copolymer Wacker Ethylene copolymers - emulsions (VAE, EVC) ADHESIVE SEALANT >> Putty Vinnapas® RI 551 Z is an ethylene/vinyl laurate/vinyl chloride terpolymer powder which redisperses readily in water. It is used as a binder and to impart hydrophobic, ie, water-repellent properties. It is chiefly used in con-junction with inorganic binders such as cement, hy-drated lime, waterglass or gypsum to make plasters, joint mortars, trowelling compounds and construction adhesives, or as a sole binder for plasters, paints and adhesives. Vinnapas® RI 551 Z enhances the adhesion, flex-ural strength, plasticity, abrasion resistance and workability of the products in which it is incorporated. Thanks to the special composition and method of producing the resin, alkaline activation results in pronounced, long-lasting water repellency of building materials, so that water absorption is greatly re-duced. Because of its low glass-transition tempera-ture, Vinnapas® RI 551 Z, if added in sufficient amounts, imparts excellent plasticity to building ma-terials, even at low temperatures. Vinnapas® RI 551 Z contains a fine, mineral filler as anti-blocking agent. It does not contain any solvents, plasticizers or film-forming aids. The hydrophobic component is incorporated into the resin during the special polymerization process. Alkaline activation is necessary to obtain the full water-repellent effect. In the case of fomulations containing cement, lime or waterglass, this occurs automatically. Since the hydrophobic component is an integral part of the polymer, it cannot be leached out of the building material. Vinnapas® RI 551 Z acts as binder and water re-pellent. Usual amounts of Vinnapas® RI 551 Z will not appreciably affect water-vapour permeability. The hydrophobic properties conferred on building materials by Vinnapas® RI 551 Z greatly depend on the formulation. Additives such as defoamers, air entrainers, thickeners, anti-flow additives, flow con-trol agents, superplasticizers, retarders, water reten-tion agents or surface active agents can significantly affect the water repellency. Vinnapas® RI 551 Z is easily wetted and mixes with water to form a homogeneous dispersion. Tile and construction adhesives For thin-bed tile adhesives with good frost and heat resistance, we recommend a formulation containing 40 – 50 % cement, 2 – 4 % Vinnapas® RI 551 Z and about 0.2 – 0.4 % of a high-viscosity grade of cellu-lose ether and, if necessary, organic fibres, special active fillers or starch ethers for better non-slump properties. Where adhesives with enhanced plastic-ity are required, the proportion of redispersible pow-der should be increased and the amount of cement decreased. Adhesives for external insulation and finishing systems (EIFS) Hydraulic, powder EIFS adhesives should contain 25 - 45 % cement, 3 – 6 % Vinnapas® RI 551 Z and 0.1 – 0.3 % of a suitable water-retention agent such as a medium-viscosity grade of cellulose ether. To obtain adhesives with enhanced plasticity, we rec-ommend the use of no less than 5 % Vinnapas® RI 551 Z and no more than 15 – 25 % cement. These adhesives are especially suitable for use with ex-panded polystyrene panels. Where panels have to be cut with a hot wire, care must be taken that cut edges have not fused excessively. If extruded ex-panded polystyrene panels are to be bonded, it is essential to carry out preliminary tests. Trowelling compounds and sealing slurries The addition of Vinnapas® RI 551 Z to trowelling compounds improves their adhesion to substrates, abrasion resistance, strength, plasticity and work-ability. Products containing Vinnapas® RI 551 Z can be applied thinly without any problem. In addition, such products are highly water-repellent and, if suitably formulated, have a waterproofing effect (pressur-ized- water test up to 7 bar). Interior trowelling compounds, putties and joint fillers Between 2 and 20 % Vinnapas® RI 551 Z is used, depending on the particular application. In addition to Vinnapas® RI 551 Z, these products often contain organic binders such as polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose derivatives or starch ethers. Solvent-free, plasticizer-free, film-forming aid-free, water redispersible ethylene/vinyl laurate/vinyl chloride terpolymer powder. Used in conjunction with inorganic binders such as cement, hydrated lime, waterglass or gypsum to make tile and construction adhesives, adhesives for external insulation and finishing systems, sealing slurries and putties, and as a sole binder for adhesives. Enhances adhesion, flexural strength, plasticity, abrasion resistance and workability. Provides hydrophobic, ie, very good water-repellent properties. Contains a fine mineral filler as antiblocking agent and polyvinyl alcohol as stabilizer. Offers low glass transition temperature.
