Small Packages Lead to Immense Opportunities: Microencapsulation of Adhesives and Sealants

SpecialChem | Edward M Petrie - Feb 22, 2012

Microencapsulation can be an important instrument in the adhesive or sealant formulator’s toolbox. This versatile technology makes it possible to combine materials that are otherwise incompatible or have unworkable reaction rates if they were compounded in a conventional manner. Microencapsulation can also provide for the incorporation of additives that can be released in a time-controlled method during the product's life. This significantly broadens the working space in which the formulator was previously contained. This article is intended to provide an introduction to the use of microencapsulation in adhesives and sealants. It will identify the capabilities and limitations of the technology and show how added value can be incorporated into an adhesive or sealant formulation. Strategies for developing microencapsulated products will be examined so that the technology can be approached by an inexperienced formulator.
