Alternatives to conventional solvents and other VOCs that are employed in waterborne adhesive formulations are discussed in this article. The primary focus is on coalescing agents or co-solvents which are present in minor concentrations, but as a whole can significantly contribute to environmental issues. The formulator’s goal is to achieve the properties required for the end-product without VOCs in the formulation.

...as we are all aware, the drive towards less VOC's & ozone in our chemicals, esp. adhesives, is well under way, yet there will be some obstacles...the fact that costs will accumulate from the need to revamp or upgrade current machinery & instrumentation to handle the impact of waterborne adhesives (due to potential corrosion & deteriation of equipment) as replacements for VOC-based ones will assuredly hinder or atleast burden somewhat these transitions...this discussion was very informative to me and introduced some topics that in my opinion certainly merit some forther studies and observations...
