Why Adhesives Fail - Part 2: Conducting a Failure Investigation

SpecialChem | Edward M Petrie - May 30, 2012

This article is the concluding article in a two part series, “Why Adhesives Fail”. This article describes the steps to follow when conducting a failure investigation. Part 1 of the article reviews the general factors related to most unexpected adhesive failures. Solving adhesive failures requires knowledge of the fundamental aspects of materials, especially polymeric materials. It also requires knowledge of additives and how they respond to processing and environmental service conditions. And, of course, the most significant prerequisite for a failure investigator is experience. The very first step in the analysis, therefore, may be to get outside assistance. Fortunately, there are specialists in failure analysis that do independent consulting, and several books and other publications on failure analysis are available. However, there is a general lack of publications specifically related to adhesive bond failure.
