Sealants for Construction - Part V : Applications
Part V-1 : Masonry, precast concrete, curtain walls, high rise building, roofs, structural glazing.

SpecialChem - Jul 21, 2004

Masonry may be made with concrete, bricks, concrete blocks, sometimes cellular concrete, according to the construction techniques in favor in each country. Although these materials do not have high coefficients of expansion, the movements of the joints may become high when the parts of the construction (panels, complete walls, high rise structures…) are large. There are several types of joints in masonry: When a concrete wall or floor has large dimension (larger than 10 to 20 meters), cracks may appear in some places resulting from shrinkage of the concrete during drying. Expansion and contraction of the masonry elements will also result from water absorption and drying. We have discussed this in Part IV. Therefore any large construction structure must be split into smaller sections separated by voids or joints, so that the various parts of the construction may change in dimensions without adverse effects, and of course these joints must be filled with sealants in order to forbid the penetration of water, dust, insects… into the building. Joints are cut into the concrete work and filled with sealants.
