M
Mastic
Highly viscous adhesive material applied by trowel to give thick glue lines
with gap sealing properties.
Mechanical Adhesion
Adhesion between surfaces in which the adhesive holds the parts together by
interlocking action. (to know more about mechanical adhesion, visit the
Adhesion Guide
).
Melamine formaldehyde, MF
(extended definition)
Melamine is a colorless crystalline substance derived from dicyandiamide and
forms a resin suitable for adhesives when joined with formaldehyde .
Modified-phenolic adhesive
Highly used for making highstrength metal-to-metal and metal-to-wood joints,
and for bonding metal to brakelining materials. Requires heat and pressure for
the curing process. (see also Phenolic
/ Phenol Formaldehyde, PF
)
Moisture content
Amount of water in a material determined under prescribed conditions, and
expressed as a percentage of the mass of the moist specimen, that is, the mass
of the dry substance plus the water present.
Moisture scavenger
Additive used in PU systems, zinc rich adhesives and other water-sensitive
compositions to remove the residual water, which may come into adhesive with
solvents, pigments and other ingredients and cause a reduction in binder
reactivity and adhesive defects. Monofunctional isocyanates, oxazolidine
derivatives, and synthetic zeolytes (alkali aluminium silicates) are the most
used commercial moisture scavengers.
MS Polymer
(extended definition)
Silane-modified adhesives and sealants based on MS polymers (Modified Silane
Polyether) are designed as one-component systems. Due to their chemical
structure MS polymers exhibit good weathering and aging resistance as well as
an almost universal adhesion spectrum without need of primers. Especially on
critical substrates MS polymers often succeed where other systems fail.
