Kynar® PVDF resins designed for lithium-ion batteries on display at Advanced Automotive Batteries Conference

SpecialChem - Feb 8, 2010

Arkema's Kynar® grades designed specifically for lithium-ion cells were displayed at this year's Advanced Automotive Batteries Conference.

Of special interest was Arkema's new binder for lithium-ion batteries, Kynar® HSV 900 PVDF, a high molecular weight resin that provides improved adhesion with reduced loading in electrode constructions. This grade enhances the performance of both phosphates and metal oxides.

Kynar® polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resins are highly stable polymers that offer an exceptional balance of performance properties. From the beginnings of lithium technology, Arkema has worked closely with scientists to design batteries with higher charge density. From this has come Kynar® and Kynar® Flex resins that are excellent polymers for use in both polymer and liquid cell lithium batteries.

Kynar® and Kynar® Flex resins offer key advantages compared to other polymeric binders:

  • exceptional purity, which avoids interference with electrochemical reactions,
  • high electrochemical, thermal and chemical stability,
  • ease of processing,
  • excellent adhesion within electrodes.

As a leading producer of PVDF, Arkema has over 40 years experience in coating, film and polymer technologies.

A global chemical company and France's leading chemicals producer, Arkema consists of three businesses: Vinyl Products, Industrial Chemicals, and Performance Products. Arkema reports sales of 5.6 billion euros. Arkema has 15,000 employees in over 40 countries and six research centers located in France, the United States and Japan. With internationally recognized brands, Arkema holds leadership positions in its principal markets.
