WACKER Develops VAE-based VINNAPAS® EP 8010 Dispersion for Adhesive Formulation

Munich -- WACKER has developed a new dispersion specifically suited for bonding various surfaces in the paper and packaging industry. Vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers (VAE)-based VINNAPAS® EP 8010 reliably and permanently bonds challenging paper and cardboard surfaces, such as coated or painted paper, and polymeric film. Aside from its excellent adhesive strength, the new product is characterized by outstanding heat resistance, very high setting speed and ease of machine processing. Moreover, it is manufactured without the use of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO), and its VAE basis makes supplementary plasticizers unnecessary. VINNAPAS® EP 8010 is therefore ideal for formulating high-performance adhesives for demanding paper and packaging applications in which difficult-to-bond substrates have to be permanently joined. WACKER will premiere the new product at the World Adhesive & Sealant Conference (WAC) 2012, taking place from September 18 to 21 in Paris, France.
WACKER's new VINNAPAS® EP 8010, an aqueous dispersion based on vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers, offers exceptional adhesive properties for demanding paper and packaging applications. It was developed specifically for formulating adhesives for difficult surfaces, such as printed and coated papers or polymeric film made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyester or polystyrene. These are particularly challenging to bond, because their surfaces are difficult to wet with the adhesive, making it hard to obtain a stable join.
VINNAPAS® EP 8010 is the answer here: aside from ensuring excellent adhesion to a wide range of difficult surfaces, this innovative dispersion lends itself well to machine application. The product further shows outstanding setting speed and produces a highly heat-resistant bond. VINNAPAS® EP 8010 re-emulsifies fast, thus facilitating cleaning of the application equipment. The polyvinyl-alcohol-stabilized dispersion also scores with its broad formulation scope.
In addition to its exceptional adhesive properties, VINNAPAS® EP 8010 is characterized by its environmental and user-friendly properties. For example, it enables the formulation of adhesives without plasticizing additives, thereby keeping the migration potential in the adhesive extremely low. Another advantage is that the dispersion is manufactured without the use of APEO.
The new dispersion, which belongs to the VINNAPAS® Plus class for especially demanding product solutions, is thus ideal for formulating adhesives used in high-performance paper and packaging applications, such as food-packaging bags and up-market folding boxes for exclusive consumer goods, but also for further application areas, for instance in laminated products for car interiors.
