From a global perspective, hot melt adhesives and sealants represent
the third
largest technology in demand size. They are experiencing
the highest growth rate
of all adhesive and sealant technologies.
North America, Western Europe and the Far East account for nearly 90% of the
technology demand worldwide.
Hot melt production is concentrated in the
industrialized regions and sizeable amounts are exported to the technologically
less advanced regional markets where the demand is developing.
The major established market areas are packaging and converting, pressure sensitive
adhesives for
tape and label applications,
bookbinding,
disposables and
wood bonding.
Newer market applications include the
bonding of metal and plastic surfaces in
assembly operations.
Vinyl acetate and styrene copolymers plus tackifiers, oil and waxes are the
principal resin binders used for formulating hot melts. Trends include the
replacement of vinyl acetate copolymers with styrene copolymers, greater use of
reactive polyurethanes and the introduction of
metallocene polyolefins.
