Styrene block copolymers (SBCs) offer cohesion, strength, and heat resistance for both adhesives and sealants. The styrene phase forms a physically crosslinked network in the adhesive at room temperature. Of the SBCs, styrene butadiene styrene has the highest shear strength and moderately good peel strength.
RESULTING PROPERTIES
Saturated SEBS thermoplastic polymers are used in clear sealant compositions. The high tensile strength and good aging characteristics of this polymer provide high performance and long service life. A solvent based clear SEBS sealant formulation is provided above.
Viscosity can be increased by increasing the filler loading to provide for a sealant composition. This is an example of a SEBS based adhesive/sealant for the assembly of building and construction components. Because of their lower cost, SBS block copolymers are usually chosen for this type of application, but in certain applications, the SEBS or SEPS block copolymers are also used because of better long-term aging resistance.
