Styrene block copolymers (SBCs) offer cohesion, strength, and heat resistance for both pressures sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and non-pressure sensitive adhesives. The styrene phase forms a physically crosslinked network in the adhesive at room temperature. Of the SBCs, styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) has the highest shear strength and moderately good peel strength. Styrene isoprene styrene (SIS) has the highest peel strength although it is cohesively weaker than the SBS resins.
RESULTING PROPERTIES
The first formulation in the table above is for a label adhesive and the second formulation is for a tape adhesive. Styrene block copolymer type PSAs that can be applied either by hot melt application or solvent solution. The formulations are for a solvent borne system. With the appropriate solvents (hexane, MEK, toluene, acetone) a solution coating can be provided.
