Styrene block copolymers (SBCs) offer cohesion, strength, and heat resistance for both pressures sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and non-pressure sensitive adhesives as well as for sealants. The styrene phase forms a physically crosslinked network in the adhesive at room temperature. Of the SBCs, styrene butadiene styrene has the highest shear strength and moderately good peel strength.
RESULTING PROPERTIES
SBC based adhesives have a good combination of low cost, adhesion, physical properties, and processing characteristics. An SBS hot melt adhesive formulation for general purpose sealant operations is provided above. This adhesive does not have pressure sensitive characteristics, and it can be applied as a typical hot melt adhesive for the assembly of consumer products. It provides a starting formulation for a hot melt sealant for concrete that comprises SBS modified asphalt.
